From the perspective of 17 year old Alex, 'When the tide comes in' is a film about love, loss and the difficulties of being in an abusive relationship. The story begins with Alex in a loving relationship with Tom, an 18 year old collage student, who at firsts seems everything a girl could wish for. As the relationship progresses we learn that Tom is detrimental to Alex's mental state; pushing her away from her family and isolating her from her friends. Alex's friend Lily notices the struggle and tries to help her but this just causes Alex to push her away further. Tom and Alex's relationship beings to breakdown hurting not only Alex physically but mentally too.
